Innovations in cloud computing are becoming the cornerstone of modern technology. Even the current software applications are improving significantly in terms of sustainability, scalability, security, and intelligence. From AI-driven optimization, chemical compound isolation, and greenhouse gas emissions monitoring to others, cloud technologies are not only serving as an infrastructure solution but also as a digital innovation platform.

Innovations in Cloud Computing: Assist in Reducing Carbon Emissions
March 2nd 2022
As part of its mission to enable businesses to achieve sustainability in their operations, Amazon Web Services (AWS) introduced a new carbon footprint tool. This new tool provides customers with the necessary data in a visualized form. The data includes their carbon emissions history and emission trends after the AWS adoption. Customers will be able to receive an estimated amount of carbon emissions avoided by replacing their on-premises data center with AWS, and to forecast emissions based on current use.
Sustainability:
In pursuit of sustainability, Amazon is still working to empower its operations by adopting 100% renewable energy by 2025. Earlier, the company set a 2030 target, but now it is aiming to achieve sustainability five years earlier. Also, it is moving towards attaining net-zero carbon by 2040. This new tool helps customers to access their data, enabling them to measure their carbon emissions and prepare a plan for carbon reduction. With the customer carbon footprint tool, customers can quickly access information about their carbon emissions, thereby accelerating their efforts to address climate change.
Support Climate Pledge:
Amazon’s purpose in launching the customer carbon footprint tool is to pledge support for climate change. In 2019, Amazon, along with others, co-founded the Climate Pledge, which was the first to sign on. Under this agreement, Amazon plans to achieve the Paris Agreement 10 years early and to be zero-carbon by 2040. In addition, all signatories of this pledge agreed to calculate and report greenhouse gas emissions regularly. To support this, the new tool from AWS helps customers calculate emissions and quickly incorporate them into their company’s annual report.
A Brief Description of the Work Flow of the Carbon Footprint Tool
Several customers are migrating their workloads from traditional on-premises data centers to AWS for various benefits, including accelerating innovation, saving money, and achieving sustainable results from day-to-day operations. And the same has proven true with several projects that migrated from on-premises to AWS, achieving higher sustainability ratings. Based on previous data, migrating to AWS can reduce enterprises’ carbon footprint by around 81%. With plans to power AWS with renewable energy in the near future, there is an opportunity to reduce the total carbon footprint by up to 96%. During testing and development of the AWS customer carbon footprint tool, the company partnered with various enterprises, including Salesforce, Workday, Veolia, Turbonomic, and Pinterest.
High-Performance Computing of AWS Helps in Isolating Two Chemical Compounds:
April 5th 2022
Researchers from France could isolate two chemical compounds capable of slowing or stopping the outbreak of Covid-19 infections and ultimately reducing the infection severity. Researchers used high-performance computing (HPC) of Amazon Web Services (AWS) to separate these chemicals. If not for AWS, such efforts might have taken several months or years, as the CEO of Quit Pharmaceuticals said. But with AWS, the entire duration was shortened from very long to just a few months. However, these compounds are still awaiting approval to proceed to the preclinical stage for regulators’ evaluation as possible treatments or cures.
Innovations in Cloud Computing: Supporting the Emergence of New Technologies
In general, cloud computing is emerging as a savior, particularly for introducing new technologies and processes across various fields of science. In the field of pharmacology, notable developments are expected, as the application of massive computing power to isolate new compounds and discover new cures is likely to increase over the next five to ten years. With numerous benefits associated with high-end computation, research communities across biological and medical fields are closely monitoring developments in quantum computing. Researchers are working on various crucial projects, eagerly awaiting the day it unlocks its power to speed up computing tasks. The main difference of this new technology lies in its unique method of storing information using quantum-mechanical states. It contrasts with the traditional method of storing data as 0s and 1s. Though quantum computing is still in its early days, breakthroughs are likely in the near future.
